Contrary to previous reports, Cl- is visible by Cl-35 NMR inside human
erythrocytes. In spectra run at 49.01 MHz the intracellular chloride
has a linewidth at half-height of ca 700 Hz and shows double Lorentzia
n character. Mn2+ was used to relax the extracellular Cl-35(-) fo allo
w the intracellular Cl-35(-) to be seen. The experimental protocol des
cribed should allow NMR observation of anion transport rates in human
erythrocytes.
