Properties of a statistical ensemble of N modes of an electromagnetic
field in a cavity are discussed within the framework of the informatio
n-theoretical approach to statistical physics. Density operator maximi
zing the Von Neumann entropy for the case that all first- and second-o
rder correlation functions have to satisfy, and the conditions of the
thermodynamical regularity, are determined. Finally, the characteristi
c function corresponding to the estimated density operator is determin
ed which allows for evaluating all higher-order correlations.
