Indirect evidences have been found for the existence of 1,4-dihydro-1,
2,4-triazine (13) as an intermediate in the photochemically induced ri
ng contraction of aromatic 1,2,4-triazine (11). Quantummechanical calc
ulations gave a relatively low energy for this compound and its equili
brium geometry showed a non-planar structure avoiding the formation of
an 8 Pi-electron anti-aromatic system.
