The colloidal properties of carbon black feedstock from different orig
ins (petroleum and coal) which may directly influence the carbon black
quality have been investigated. The effect of feedstock asphaltenes o
n their colloidal stability on processing (storage, transportation and
treatment) is summarized. A possible relationship between incompatibi
lity of feedstock and structuro-mechanical resistance is defined using
a stability factor as a consolidated measure of capacity of dispersiv
e system. The physical and mechanical effects are found to be pronounc
ed at a particular phase change temperature state and leads to deforma
tion of the structural system. A correlation between viscous flow acti
vation energy and the stability factor is established and the colloida
l stability of the system is defined.
