Bg. Buchanan, THE ROLE OF EXPERIMENTATION IN ARTIFICIAL-INTELLIGENCE, Philosophical transactions-Royal Society of London. Physical sciences and engineering, 349(1689), 1994, pp. 153-166
Intelligence is a complex, natural phenomenon exhibited by humans and
many other living things, without sharply defined boundaries between i
ntelligent and unintelligent behaviour. Artificial intelligence focuse
s on the phenomenon of intelligent behaviour, in humans or machines. E
xperimentation with computer programs allows us to manipulate their de
sign and intervene in the environmental conditions in ways that are no
t possible with humans. Thus, experimentation can help us to understan
d what principles govern intelligent action and what mechanisms are su
fficient for computers to replicate intelligent behaviours.
