A fast response radiometer and its associated instrumentation for the
measurement of the temperature reached during impact is described in t
his paper. It is based on thermoelectrically cooled HgCdTe detector. T
he sensitivity and time response have been determined by means of stat
ic calibration tests, within the range +25 to 500 degrees C, and a dyn
amic calibration using an optical chopper at 1.35 kHz. Some results of
compression tests are provided.
