Simulations of two spall tests, performed on tantalum with a light gas
gun and an electron beam, have been carried out, using the AUTODYN-2D
and DYNA-2D codes. For each test, the spall stress is calculated from
the TAYLOR empirical formula, using a measured free surface velocity
history parameter. The first objective is to reproduce the free surfac
e velocity history and the spall layer thickness, the second one to de
termine at spall time, and in the spall plane, the material strain rat
e.
