Abstract
Inherited forms of iron overload are common. HLA-linked hemochromatosi s and possibly African iron overload are associated with a significant risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma. Early diagnosis and trea tment, before substantial iron overloading occurs, reduces morbidity a nd mortality. HLA-linked hemochromatosis is easily diagnosed, and rout ine screening in European-derived populations may be appropriate.
