Billets of small-diameter roundwoods of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L
.) were cut using a chain-saw with and without spores of Trichoderma i
ncorporated in the chain-oil. The billets were left in the field for 1
2 weeks and then assessed for differences in wood permeability and col
onisation by sapstain and decay fungi. Addition of Trichoderma spores
to the chain-oil resulted in significantly reduced sapstain colonisati
on and was associated with lower levels of decay fungi in the air-seas
oned timber. The biological treatment had no detectable effect on wood
permeability.
