A one year-old bitch, with 25-30 kg body weight, subcutaneously receiv
ed a 200 mu g/kg dose of ivermectin as treatment for a demodex mange.
Fifteen minutes after drug administration, adverse signs of salivation
, vomiting, ataxia, dispnea, tachycardia, muscular tremors and unrespo
nsiveness to external stimuli were observed. Twenty-four hours after i
nitiating treatment with a 10% solution of pentilenetetrazol in dosis
of 20 drops, orally, every 6 hrs, the symptoms were reversed and the l
ocomotive activity and alertness of the animal were recovered. The pos
sible action of ivermectin as a gamma aminobutiric receptor agonist at
CNS level and the probable antagonism to pentilenetetrazol is discuss
ed.
