Higher rates of pupation within the larval feeding habitat (Foliage) a
re reported from a non-alpine plantation forest of lodgepole pine than
are normal Ln alpine larch forests where pupation occurs in the soil.
Experimental evidence suggests that neither host plane species nor te
mperature conditions are responsible for the difference. High rates of
pupal mortality in the soil of wetter non-alpine forests may have res
ulted in selection of an alternative pupal habitat.
