X. Chang et al., SELECTION OF CUTTING REGIME FOR SELF-PROPELLED ROTARY CUTTING TOOLS, Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Part B, Journal of engineering manufacture, 209(1), 1995, pp. 63-66
A self-propelled rotary cutting tool (SPRT) can be used in metal machi
ning at higher cutting speeds with much longer tool life than conventi
onal cutting tools because of the continuous rotation of its round too
l insert driven by cutting force. The paper presents a theoretical cal
culation of cutting speed and feed rate for the SPRT together with pra
ctical concerns. Based on the research results and industrial experien
ce the principles for choosing depth of cut in turning and face millin
g and general considerations concerning the application of the tools a
re detailed.
