Sj. Leierer et al., THE EFFECT OF COUNSELOR DISABILITY, ATTENDING BEHAVIOR, AND CLIENT PROBLEM ON COUNSELING, Rehabilitation counseling bulletin, 40(2), 1996, pp. 82-95
An analogue study examined the influence of counselor disability statu
s, disability relevance of counseling content, and counselor attending
behavior on participants' perceptions of counselors. A sample of 48 u
niversity students with disabilities viewed four videotaped vignettes
portraying a client-counselor interaction. After viewing each vignette
, participants rated the counselor's attractiveness, expertness, and t
rustworthiness with the Counselor Rating Form-Short (Carrigan & Schmid
t, 1983). Significant effects, p<.05, were found for counselor disabil
ity status, counselor attending skills, and the interaction of counsel
or attending skills and counselor disability status.
