Dc. Strohmer et al., THE IMPORTANCE OF COUNSELOR DISABILITY STATUS - WHAT WE KNOW AND WHATWE NEED TO KNOW, Rehabilitation counseling bulletin, 40(2), 1996, pp. 96-115
The authors reviewed research that examined the effects of counselor d
isability status on the counselor preferences and perceptions (expertn
ess, attractiveness, and trustworthiness) of individuals with and with
out a disability. Counselor disability status seemed to have a limited
effect on perceptions and preferences, which was moderated by other c
ounseling variables. The topic being discussed in counseling, and cert
ain counselor skill variables, seemed to have a larger effect on prefe
rences and perceptions. Research and practice implications are suggest
ed.
