By examining a cockpit as a cognitive system, light is shed on the sho
rtcomings of dominant frameworks for analyzing technological changes i
n this profession. In effect, these models fail to take into account t
he distributed nature of representations about the speed. The pilots u
se two types of cognitive representations: one is external the other i
s internal. Piloting as a cognitive activity resides not just in the s
kull but in a system inclusive of mental representations as well as ex
ternal representational media.
