We develop a model of public opinion on government spending for child
care. Using American National Election Study data, we depict responden
ts' views as a function of symbolic politics, self-interest, and demog
raphic and control variables. Our results suggest the importance of sy
mbolic politics variables in shaping respondents' views, and support p
revious research demonstrating the relative importance of symbolic pol
itics over self-interest factors in determining public opinion on poli
cy matters.
