Jh. Hong et al., SEXUAL ATTITUDES AND BEHAVIOR OF CHINESE UNIVERSITY-STUDENTS IN SHANGHAI, Journal of sex education and therapy, 20(4), 1994, pp. 277-286
A questionnaire survey on the sexual attitudes and behavior of Chinese
university students in Shanghai was performed using the stratified ra
ndom sampling procedure. Tile rates of masturbation and homosexual exp
erience were much lower than those of the Western youths in the same a
ge range. Their rate of petting was higher than that of the university
students in other parts of China but their rate of coital experience
remained low. Tile students showed permissive attitudes to dating, pre
marital sex, extramarital sex and sexual chastity, but less so on mast
urbation, homosexuality or pornography. The female students had low ge
nder acceptance. How these findings could be understood in the context
of a Chinese city undergoing rapid modernization and their implicatio
ns for the future development of Chinese sexuality and sex education i
s discussed.
