Abstract
After implementing a computer-enhanced imaging system in our newly est ablished apparatus, we have achieved much higher resolution in measuri ng the surface tension of free-standing films in the smectic-A or smec tic-A(d) phase of seven different liquid-crystal compounds. The experi mental results reveal two salient features: The relation of surface te nsion to thickness and the difference in surface tension between the s mectic-A and smectic-A(d) phases.
