The adoptive transfer of T cells specific for antigens encoded by path
ogens and tumors has been an effective treatment for infections and ma
lignancies in animal models and is potentially applicable for infectio
ns occurring in immunodeficient bone marrow transplant recipients. Thi
s article reviews recent insights derived from studies of the immunobi
ology of human cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in healthy and immunode
ficient hosts and the development of adoptive immunotherapy as prophyl
axis for CMV infection in recipients of allogeneic bone marrow transpl
ants.
