Abstract
This study examined the cross-cultural robustness of the five-factor m odel in a non-Western context. Personality taxonomies were examined fo r Indian subjects by two emic (culture-specific) techniques: a free-de scriptor method and a critical incident technique. The free-descriptor method was used to examine personality structure by a quantitative me thod. The critical incident method explored personality structure more qualitatively. Both the quantitative and qualitative approaches resul ted in evidence that strongly supported the five-factor model, while a lso revealing certain culturally based departures.
