Photoabsorption by atomic Au in the 5p and 4f excitation region has be
en studied using the dual laser plasma DLP technique. The observed fea
tures are dominated by two prominent Fano-type resonance lines which c
an be attributed to 5p --> 5d and 4f --> 5d transitions of valence exc
ited 5d(9)6s(2)(D-2(5/2)) AU followed by autoionization. The experimen
tal results are compared to spectra calculated for the excitation of 5
d(10)6s(1)(S-2(1/2)) ground and 5d(9)6s(2)(D-2(5/2), D-2(3/2)) valence
-excited states within the (R)Hartree-Fock theory and the relativistic
time dependent local density approximation.
