Cw. Dekanski et al., A PARAMETRIC MODEL OF A 2-STROKE ENGINE FOR DESIGN AND ANALYSIS, Computer methods in applied mechanics and engineering, 137(3-4), 1996, pp. 411-425
In this paper we demonstrate a procedure for designing a two-stroke en
gine with good scavenging properties. To achieve this, a method of sur
face design, referred to as the Partial Differential Equation (PDE) Me
thod, is utilised to represent the critical elements of the internal g
eometry of the engine. To assess the scavenge flow inside the engine w
e run steady-state CFD calculations, from which a suitably chosen perf
ormance measure is calculated. We then demonstrate how we may improve
the value of the scavenge performance measure by adjusting the design
parameters associated with the engine geometry. A virtue of the method
is that the geometric model for the two-stroke engine may be rapidly
altered by changing the values of a small number of design parameters.
