Contaminants present in waste water, seepage water and ground water in
clude salts, heavy metals and organic compounds of low biodegradabilit
y. This paper considers the wide range of physico-chemical processes a
vailable for separation of such compounds from water and points out th
eir optimal and economic range of application. Main subjects are desor
ption processes (air/steam stripping), adsorption processes (activated
carbon, polymeric resins) and membrane separation processes. Alternat
ive water treatment technologies (evaporation, distillation, liquid-li
quid-extraction, oxidation, flocculation and precipitation) and combin
ed processes are presented and discussed.
