In atopic eczema patients the well-known abnormal cutaneous reactivity
of the blood vessels (white dermographism, delayed blanch after acety
lcholine, paradoxical blanching after nicotinic acid application and d
iminished erythema after histamine injection) were observed during acu
te eczematous episodes and later in an exzema-free state in comparison
with controls. In this follow-up study the use of different stimuli a
llowed us to demonstrate abnormal cutaneous vascular reactions in the
patients depending on the severity of their atopic eczema. Severely af
fected patients showed persistence of the paradoxical vascular reactio
ns even in an eczema-free cutaneous state.
