Abstract
Diagnosis is an active research area where many diagnostic methods hav e been proposed. In this paper, we make explicit the features that cha racterize these methods within a conventional framework as well as wit hin a neural framework. Specifically, we show that each representation of diagnostic knowledge requires a specific reasoning type whichever framework is adopted, logical or neural. Then, we propose a distribute d neural model to mechanize abductive reasoning within a neural framew ork. Finally, we compare our work with other proposals and indicate di rections deserving further investigation. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc .
