Abstract
Lasers made of regular (i.e., non-polarization-maintaining) rare earth doped single-mode fibers have birefringence which is randomly distrib uted along the length of the gain medium. This property and its conseq uences are examined in detail, together with applications to tunable l asers, as well as to lasers capable of simultaneously lasing in a numb er of discrete spectral lines.
