A selected group of individuals representing carbon producers, aluminu
m smelters, a test laboratory, and academia was formed to discuss test
methods, approval procedures, and quality control methods of carbon c
athode blocks and ramming paste. This paper presents the consensus con
clusions reached thus far. Existing standards are commented upon, but
the importance of performing tests tinder operating conditions is stre
ssed. As described in the following, new ISO standards are proposed in
the following areas: sodium expansion, sodium resistance, x-ray chara
cterization, rammability of paste, expansion/shrinkage of paste.
