The paper examines the effect of pulp fibers and mineral fillers on th
e optical and mechanical characteristics of printing papers. An experi
ment for raw material furnish and handsheet preparation investigated b
eating degree, hardwood pulp, and the amount and type of calcium carbo
nate on the light scattering coefficient and tensile index of paper. L
imiting the paper quality parameters combined with the evaluation of t
he fiver and filler interaction allowed optimization of the hardwood p
ulp beating and the calcium carbonate.
