Using the LET distribution obtained by CR-39 plastic track detectors a
nd the total absorbed dose obtained by TLDs, whose response for relati
vistic heavy ions is proportional to the absorbed dose, the dose equiv
alents at various locations inside the Space Shuttle (STS-47) have bee
n estimated. The results show a large difference in the effective qual
ity factor compared with the results obtained from a tissue equivalent
proportional counter. The reason for this discrepancy is discussed.
