In vitro activity against Giardia intestinalis was used for bioassay-g
uided fractionation of crude extracts from C. minima. The sesquiterpen
e lactone, brevilin A was isolated and found to have antigiardial acti
vity (IC50 = 16.1 mu M) and was similarly active in vitro against Enta
moeba histolytica (IC50 between 4.5 and 9 mu M) and against Plasmodium
falciparum (IC50 = 9.42 mu M). Three flavonoids, quercetin, quercetin
3-methyl ether and kaempferol 7-glucosylrhamnoside were also isolated
.
