Abstract
To test statistically the validity of magnetic reconnection theory, a study of geomagnetic activity and of the plasma sheet (PS) dynamics du ring the solar cycle 1965-86 was carried out. It was found that during the thinning of the plasma sheet alone, the potential drop (PHI) acro ss the plasma sheet, the power transferred (P) and the energy released (E) during the selected 44 substorm events were maximum. The dependen ce of PHI, P and E with K(p) index and sunspot number (CHI) were verif ied.
