J. Paladino et al., INVESTIGATION OF THE PHYSIOLOGICAL PROPORTIONS OF THE HUMAN BRAIN VENTRICLES BY THE METHOD OF COMPUTERIZED-TOMOGRAPHY, Collegium antropologicum, 20(2), 1996, pp. 403-412
The system of the brain ventricles was investigated on 205 examinees b
y the method of computerized tomography. The purpose of this research
was to define the physiological proportions of the brain ventricles, d
ifferences between male and female examinees as well as to determine c
haracteristics of the brain ventricles in various age groups. Physiolo
gical margins of the brain ventricular system proportions were determi
ned and thus the basis for estimation of the cerebrospinal fluid circu
lation, necessary in everyday clinical practice, was set. Four origina
l indices of the dimensions of the brain ventricles were defined. Thes
e indices are an accurate indicator of changes that occur in the ventr
icular system with age. Significant differences in the ventricular sys
tem proportions between male and female examinees were found, as well
as a notable enlargement in the middle-aged and elderly, which is impo
rtant for a correct evaluation of atrophic changes of the central nerv
ous system.
