W. Kark et al., IMPROVEMENT OF ORTHOGRADE GOLYTELY COLON LAVAGE BY ADDITIONAL APPLICATION OF SIMETHICONE, Zeitschrift fur Gastroenterologie, 33(1), 1995, pp. 20-23
The effectiveness of an additional application of Simethicone during a
n orthograde lavage with Golytely solution in preparation for colonsco
py was tested in a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled double
blind study on 152 patients 78 Simethicone, 74 placebo). The colon reg
ions were separated into rectosigmoid, descending colon, transverse co
lon and ascending colon and interpreted according to the criteria form
ation of foam and contamination with feces. By the endoscopic examinat
ion of the colon we found a statistically significant improvement in v
isibility in the patients treated with Simethicone in contrast to plac
ebo both in the individual scores, separated according to each of the
colon re-gions, and in the total scores (p < 0,01). Furthermore, the t
ime needed for the colonscopy could be significantly shortened in the
Simethicone group (p < 0,05). Adverse effects were not observed. We co
nclude that the additional application of Simethicone during the ortho
grade colon ravage with Golytely solution results in an improvement in
the preparation for the colonoscopy as well as visibility of the colo
n mucosa.
