The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) su
pports research concerning the determinants of normal and pathological
development of the nervous system, from the genetic to the environmen
tal. NINDS also funds basic and clinical research concerning the etiol
ogy, diagnosis, treatment, consequences, and prevention of the spectru
m of neurodevelopmental disorders including neurobehavioral and neurod
egenerative disorders (National Advisory Council Neurological Disorder
s and Stroke, 1989, 1992; Division of Convulsive, Developmental and Ne
