Relying on the numerical model of a laser with short-time periodic mod
ulation of losses, which provides satisfactory agreement with experime
ntal results, we study the temporal characteristics of oscillation pul
ses in the regime of nonstationary supermodes of high orders within br
oad ranges of the main parameters of the system. We propose a method f
or shortening laser pulses by selecting separate intensity spikes in z
eroth-order nonstationary supermodes in the nonlinear stage. It is dem
onstrated that deep periodic sinusoidal modulation of losses does not
ensure a high (better than 40%) reproducibility of such a process. Gen
erally, an additional increase or decrease in the Q factor in the begi
nning of the nonlinear stage of oscillation does not provide an increa
se in the reproducibility of separate spikes. We propose to improve th
e reproducibility of such spikes by using a modulation function whose
shape is asymmetric within the period.
