Theater improvisation is not only a fascinating recreational activity
but can also be of use in family therapy. The model of improvisation p
resented here is compared with related therapeutic approaches as Gesta
lt therapy, psychodrama, drama therapy, pretend technique; the clinica
l use of improvisation is conceptualized within a social constructivis
t framework. By means of a case example taken from therapeutic practic
e it is illustrated how rigid family member positions can be shifted a
nd changed.
