9-Anthrylethylene derivatives 1 to 12 are synthesized to study their f
luorescence properties. Dual emission is observed in some cases and it
s origin is due to involvement of locally excited (LE) and charge tran
sfer (CT) excited states. Fluorescence solvatochromism observed is a c
lear indication for the involvement of CT state. Photochemical trans-c
is isomerisation originates from the CT singlet excited state. Effects
of solvent polarity, solvent viscosity, acceptor group and micellar e
ffects on fluorescence of these 1-12 were also studied. Copyright (C)
