The mechanism of geminate recombination of quasi-free electrons in liq
uid water was considered. The recombination occurs at electrostatic di
sequilibrium and the recombination time is comparable with the time of
electrostatic polarization of the medium. The major contribution to t
he recombination is made by ion pairs that are formed via direct ioniz
ation rather than autoionization. The mechanism of formation of hydrog
en atoms at the early stage of radiolysis of a strongly alkaline aqueo
us solution is analyzed. The radiation resistance of liquid water with
respect to the formation of hydrogen atoms is explained.
