Abstract
This article explores the boundary between the best interests of the c hild and his or her family and those of the community. Discussed in th e context of the changing structure and functions of the family are ch ild abuse, neglect, and abandonment; divorce and custody conflicts; li fe-saving medical treatment ordered by the court; emancipation of adol escents; and the child as witness.
