Abstract
The catalytic activity of Fe(II) and Fe(III) in the aqueous oxidation of bisulphite by molecular oxygen at bisulphite concentrations similar to those in cloud water has been studied. Secondary Ion Mass Spectros copy (SIMS) of insoluble sulphates derived from bisulphite after oxida tion by O-18(2) gives different O-18/S-32 ratios for Fe(II) and Fe(III ), indicating that the oxidation mechanism is different in these two s pecies.
