A. Jucgla et al., CALCINOSIS CUTIS FOLLOWING LIVER-TRANSPLANTATION - A COMPLICATION OF INTRAVENOUS CALCIUM ADMINISTRATION, British journal of dermatology, 132(2), 1995, pp. 275-278
Calcinosis cutis may be a complication of administration of intravenou
s calcium solutions. We report four patients who developed calcinosis
cutis following orthotopic liver transplantation, all of whom had rece
ived calcium chloride solutions intravenously during surgery. There wa
s no evidence of extravasation of the solutions. A gradual improvement
of the lesions was seen in the subsequent months. This complication o
f intravenous calcium infusions is probably related to the large amoun
ts of blood-derived products and of calcium salts administered during
surgery.
