A new method for the optimum synthesis of flexible mechanisms is prese
nted in this paper. The concept of characteristic parameters is propos
ed firstly and applied into the design process of a flexible mechanism
, which leads the design to an active way. The difficulties of selecti
ng an initial value and searching a global optimal solution in optimis
ation are overcome through a fore process of the dynamic characteristi
c analysis of flexible mechanism in spectrogram forms. The computation
time is reduced greatly in this active design procedure. As an exampl
e, the design of a flexible RSS'R space mechanism with optimal dynamic
characters is obtained successfully by this method. The encouraging r
esult is, through comparison, found to be superior to that obtained by
general methods.
