Abstract
The paper discusses the limits of applicability of the most common app roximate formulae employed for calculating the [H3O+] value of aqueous solutions containing a weak electrolyte whose acid-base behaviour is completely described by a single ionization process. These limits are so fixed as to avoid that absurd results are obtained. In addition, a new simple formula is proposed, that overcomes some drawbacks of the t raditional formulae, and an unknown, singular feature of a well-known formula is pointed out.
