Wm. Williamson et al., METHOD FOR RAPID REMOVAL OF ETHANOL FROM CHLOROFORM IN SOIL MICROBIALBIOMASS DETERMINATIONS, Communications in soil science and plant analysis, 26(3-4), 1995, pp. 407-410
A method is described for the removal of stabilising ethanol from reag
ent-grade chloroform (CHCl3) which is quicker, safer, and as effective
and reliable as the standard method described in Jenkinson and Powlso
n (1976). The proposed method foregoes the use of concentrated acid an
d distillation and involves shaking CHCl3 with distilled water followe
d by drying the final chloroform phase over anhydrous calcium chloride
(CaCl2). Both methods yielded CHCl3 containing residual ethanol of le
ss than 0.001% w/w.
