In the United Kingdom, clinical biochemistry is practised by medical a
nd non-medical graduates. Their training is postgraduate, led by the p
rofession and has a strong vocational orientation. Although there is c
onsiderable overlap between the training of medical and nonmedical gra
duates, each group has a different career structure and different trai
ning requirements. The training of non-medical biochemists has recentl
y been restructured. Their new training programme is described in deta
il; for comparison, the training of medical graduates is outlined.
