Abstract
The authors assert that advancement of dentistry as a clinical science has been hampered by a failure to practice evidence-based care, which incorporates principles derived from clinical epidemiology. The schis m between the cultures of researcher and practitioner was most evident at a recent National Institutes of Health Technology Assessment Confe rence on the Management of Temporomandibular Disorders.
