The problem of designing cabin crew patterns according to flight sched
ules is an important aspect of resource management for the airline ind
ustries. So far, there have been very few discussions on the detailed
design of such systems. The paper describes a knowledge-based approach
to the problem and presents the design and implementation issues. A p
rototype known as the Cabin Crew Pattern Generator has been successful
ly constructed and validated. A hybrid knowledge representation formal
ism has been adopted in modelling the system. It is envisaged that min
or extensions are needed to the existing prototype to have a fully ope
rational cabin crew planning system.
