The electronically excited KCd 2 (2) Pi state has been populated in a
photochemical reaction of K-2(C (1) Pi(u)) with Cd(5 S-1(0)). The K-Cd
vapor mixture was prepared in a crossed heat-pipe oven. The atom dens
ities of the K and Cd atoms in the vapor mixture were controlled by pr
eparation of the amalgams with different mole fraction ratios of the r
elevant components. A new diffuse excimer band was observed in the reg
ion from 600 to 660 nm. Quantum mechanical spectral simulations for th
e KCd 2 (2) Pi-->X (2) Sigma(+) transition were performed, using poten
tial energy curves calculated by Czuchaj, Rebentrost, Stoll and Preuss
and showed good agreement with experiment. Other KCd transitions obse
rved in different experiments are discussed.
