The polarization of the UV and near VUV bands of chrysene and E-stilbe
ne have been measured up to 70000 cm-1. The high natural polarization
of the synchrotron radiation was used in combination with matrix-isola
tion to perform photoselection experiments. The limits of the of photo
selection technique in connection with low symmetry molecules are disc
ussed. Comparison with existing data for the low energy region (nu les
s-than-or-equal-to 50000 cm-1) confirms the applicability of the photo
selection technique to determine electronic transition moment directio
ns in low-symmetry molecules. CNDO/S-SDCI results allow a consistent a
ssignment of the whole energy region up to the experimental limit of a
bout 70000 cm-1.
