Rigorous analytical design equations for general integrated compensate
d baluns (Marchand baluns) have been derived based on the mode paramet
ers of the associated coupled strip sections. It is shown that a third
-order balun is realizable with the use of two equal sections of coupl
ed lines. Example components using planar as well as multilayer MMIC t
echnology have been designed with the method presented here. Simulated
results obtained by approximate TEM analysis as well as those generat
ed with a 2.5D EM full-wave simulator show good broadband performance.
